Chanukah is Just as Good as Christmas

December 18, 2020 in Thoughts

I think it’s time that we all admit that Chanukah is just as cool as Christmas. Retailers have sold you on Hanukkah as that two foot space near the dog food aisle that has some nice stuff in a hazy display of silver and blue. They don’t want you to know what I know. When you Chanukah after almost a year of solitude, where every late night worry or mid day frazzle could have only been discussed with a technological replication of a human being I know, you really take stock of what gratitude looks like at this moment in your life. And man, I am grateful for some very incredible people. Chanukah is an eight-day meditation on strength. Every night, with every light, to remind us of days long ago. Every night, an internal reminder of the struggle of all people to reach for the hard attainable. To survive. Not just to survive - to thrive. To look at miracles in one’s life, in every corner, from every angle, and see them in all shapes and sizes, everywhere. It builds over time. Every night, not just a confirmation, but an affirmation. So, yeah. Maybe Target could chip off a little bit of that football field of green and red and make it a little more blue and silver. And here’s another thought while we’re at it. There are thousands of celebrations of global cultures, and we all live together. Maybe we can make this a monthly thing where we start normalizing that there are lots of different things to celebrate that aren’t Easter, Christmas and back to school. All of these holidays are cool. They’re beautiful, when you learn about them. Let’s start with Kwanzaa and the Lantern Festival that are coming up. They can redo Chanukah next year.
